International Driver's Permit (IDP)

What is an IDP?
  • An IDP is a translation of your driving license into multiple languages, including Italian, which is required for non-EU drivers to legally drive in Italy.

Requirements:
  • You must have a valid driving license from your country.
  • For U.S. and Canadian guests, your license must be valid for at least six months from the IDP issuance date.
  • Age requirement: Generally, you must be at least 18 years old.

Cost:
  • The IDP costs approximately $20 USD or the equivalent in your local currency.

Where to Apply:
  • U.S. Guests: Apply through AAA (American Automobile Association) at www.aaa.com.
  • Canadian Guests: Apply via CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) at www.caa.ca.

Application Process:
  • Complete an application form.
  • Provide two passport-sized photos.
  • Present your valid driver's license.
  • Pay the fee.

Important Note:
  • Apply before you travel. IDPs are not issued overseas, and you must have your national driving license with you when driving in Italy.

ETIAS Travel Authorization


What is ETIAS?:
 ETIAS is a new screening for visa-exempt travelers entering Europe, enhancing security. It starts in mid-2025.
Important Note: ETIAS is expected to launch in mid-2025, but no specific date has been announced. We’re sharing this in advance to keep you informed. As of January, applications are not open yet. We’ll provide updates as they become available. No action needed as of now.

Who Needs ETIAS: 
  • Visa-exempt countries (U.S., Canada, Colombia, Venezuela) need ETIAS for short stays.
  • EU and Schengen nationals are exempt.

Cost: 
€7 for adults 18-70; free for those under 18 or over 70.

Requirements: 
  • Valid passport

  • Processing typically minutes, up to 30 days if further checks needed
  • Valid for 3 years or until passport expires, multiple entries for 90 days in 180.
